A concert for St Nicholas’ Day
Britten’s St Nicolas and Haydn’s Missa Sancti Nicolai
Saturday 6 December, 7.30pm
St Giles, Cripplegate, London
This December the Esterhazy Singers are celebrating St Nicholas’ Day with a performance of Britten’s dramatic St Nicolas cantata and Haydn’s sublime Missa Sancti Nicolai in the beautiful surroundings of St Giles, Cripplegate – the parish church in the heart of the Barbican. The concert will feature outstanding soloists, including the talented tenor Greg Tassell in the cantata’s title role, alongside players from the Little Baroque Company and Harmony on Heels ladies’ choir.
Named after Haydn’s patron, Prince Esterhazy, the Esterhazy Singers has established a reputation over its 40-year history for its performances of unaccompanied English partsongs and has recently recorded Jewels in the crown: a treasury of English choral music, which is available to buy as a CD online and can be downloaded from the iTunes store.
Widely regarded as one of the leading amateur choirs in the City of London, The Esterhazy Singers is directed by choral specialist Esther Jones (also Associate Director of the National Youth Choirs of Great Britain and part-time tutor at the Royal Academy of Music).
