United Chip has recently opened on the corner of Clerkenwell Road and Goswell Road, and thus within a short walk of the Barbican.  It offers what it claims to be a more modern take on fish and chips. It provides take-out and eat-in options.

Cod, haddock and Pollock come in fresh daily. Along with Dingly Dell pork sausages, the fish is beer battered and fried in sunflower oil (lighter than alternative frying oils).

Other food choices include: the very popular fish finger sandwich; Japanese-style Panko bread crumbed halloumi; soft shell crab burger and prawn burger served after 3pm and all day Saturdays.

All the above are served with a generous portion of traditional chips or thin frites. Accompaniments include homemade mushy peas and sauces (curry, tartar, Bangkok mayo, aioli and gravy). Sundae Design Studio created the interior and shop front.

To take out we tried medium cod and chips £10, prawn burger and frites £9, mushy peas £2 (personal favourite), tartar sauce and Bangkok mayo. Portion sizes are filing. We also returned to eat in: battered sausage & frites £7.50, medium cod & chips (by now a family favourite with mushy peas), curry sauce £1.50 and gravy £1.50, a chilled glass of Poggio Nicchiaia Vermentino £5.50 for 175ml glass (it is licensed) and a Dalston cola £2.50. A selection of red & white wines in small medium and bottles is available as well as fino, Ca’ di Rajo DOC prosecco extra dry, Disco Pils draught beer & various craft beers.

Here’s the family’s views: cod was succulent, batter crispy and a good ratio of both. Chips and frites are not too greasy. Nice curry sauce – slightly creamy, aromatic & not too spicy. Tartar sauce is refreshing and not too acidic. Prawn burger had a nice firm-ish texture, a good degree of spice and came in a brioche bun with lettuce, pickle and Bangkok mayo.

On the environmentally conscious side all packaging is biodegradable and cooking oil is used for bio fuel.
