Savage Garden rooftop bar is a good choice for a weekday lunch. We visited on a Monday following a river walk.

Savage Garden rooftop bar

It’s just off Trinity Square, near the Thames, on the 12th floor of Hilton’s Doubletree hotel. The bar itself has great views through floor to ceiling windows on three sides – Tower Bridge and the Tower of London directly in front, spanning out to Canary Wharf to the east and the Shard to the west. Seating in this part of the venue is high bar tables and chairs. There is a cosier more colourful bistro-style space to the back/side of the bar area, looking through to the Shard and across to one of the two outdoor terraces.

Savage Garden starters

Starters: Burnt Asparagus – with shaved pecorino, rapeseed-chive mayo & wafer-thin crispy roast bun-bread crisps – £8 and Drunken Gin ‘Pickled’ Chalk Farm Trout – with quinoa, lemon oil, spicy beetroot ketchup – £10.

Mains: Fish & Chips (with crushed peppermint peas & caper remoulade) £12. Crisp, slightly dense batter complimented flaky succulent fish & the remoulade had an appreciated spice. Purple Sprouting Broccoli – with miso baba ghanoush, crispy spiced chick peas, smoked paprika oil & pitta bread – £10.

Fish and Chips main course

Drinks: alcohol-free XXX Soda – manuka honey ginger tea, ginseng, turmeric, cider vinegar – £8 and Rapitala Gran Cru Chardonnay £17/glass.

Verdict: Enjoyable, would go back again. Lunch in the week is quieter than weekends and evenings, which get very busy. Weekday lunch is served 12pm – 3pm and has a separate menu. We chose lighter dishes – good flavours & presentation. Staff were lovely. Fellow diners included a family group and two couples. Yes, you can eat at other places for less but here you get such great views over the Tower of London and Tower Bridge.

Savage Schloss

We were subsequently also lucky enough to get a couple of tickets to the grand opening of Savage Garden’s new rooftop Après ski themed bar – Savage Schloss.  There may be many rooftop bars in London now, but not like this one!  The lift is decked out like a bubble lift on the mountains (with view to match).  Gingham tablecloths, fur throws and a multitude of mountain-style seating await you as you enjoy the fantastic views of The Shard, Tower of London, and The Gherkin through the Savoie curtains.

Great venue for Christmas parties (if you haven’t booked already), and somewhere really different to meet up with friends.  Savage Garden is, as noted above,  situated on the 12th floor of the DoubleTree by Hilton – Tower of London hotel – a minute’s stroll from Tower Hill tube.  Come out of the tube and appreciate the evening view of the Tower of London across the river.
