I reside in one of the low-rise blocks where the post and electricity meter cupboard in the door until contains asbestos.

Estate-wide, we’ve observed a significant and understandable increase in requests for meter upgrades to smart meters. Unfortunately, some companies have proceeded with these replacements despite the presence of asbestos in these cupboards, resulting in asbestos debris being left behind.

A small number of residents are actively campaigning not only for the cleanup of this hazardous debris but also for the establishment of a clear process for residents wishing to replace their electricity meters. Encouragingly, there are indications that the City is beginning to address asbestos issues more professionally. We are hopeful that the new BEO incumbents will tackle these challenges head-on and drive meaningful progress.

It is crucial to highlight that improper handling of asbestos-containing materials poses serious risks to both workers and the general public. Exposure to asbestos can lead to severe illnesses such as mesothelioma, lung cancer, and asbestosis. The danger increases with each exposure, and while asbestos-related diseases are treatable, they remain incurable, with no cure found by mesothelioma specialists to date.

If you are tackling similar asbestos related issues in your own block then please get in touch so we can pool resources.
