Just had lunch with my 14 year old daughter at Bird of Smithfield’s Lounge Bar. It’s cosy, warm and friendly and it’s appeal is broad, with an interesting mix of all ages and styles of people eating and drinking. Décor is a successful informal blend of youthful arty styled lounge/dining room/bar.
The Lounge Menu is served 11am-11pm Mon-Fri and 11am-10pm Sat. Veggie burger (£7.00) is delicious – lentils, grated root veggies, coriander, herb mayo in a soft seeded white bun with coleslaw and side of mixed dark leaf salad (£3.50). Olivia had a plain burger in seeded bun with coleslaw (£6.00) and side of medium/thin cut chips (£3.50). Delicious. Coleslaw (red cabbage, onion, carrot) is just dressed in a little oil, fresh & simple. Other popular choices: burger with brisket and Lincolnshire poacher’s cheese £13.50; salmon with shrimp or chicken with Welsh rarebit burgers. For lighter snacks try the sharing platter (£15): cod bites, beetroot cured salmon on buckwheat pancake, pearl barley & Berkswell cheese fitters with smoked tomato sauce and honey/mustard sausage with black pudding. For desert we shared treacle tart (one of the best I’ve had – soft, chewy not too sweet, crisp pastry) with clotted cream (£5.50). Other choices: sorbet – fig; home made ice cream – apple brandy, apricot, vanilla, banana.
50% off all these prices (food only) for rest of November 2013. Please mention Barbican Residents’ 50% discount Lounge menu offer when booking.
Cocktails looked interesting (£8 approx): Prosecco with rhubarb; Ketel 1 vodka, vanilla bitters & grapefruit. And many more.
Wines: list changes regularly. Popular by the glass choices – Pinot Gris Pulenta Estate, Mendoza 2012 (£7) or Malbec, Siesta, Argentina (£8).
If you haven’t been in here, I’d say it’s worth a visit.
