If you haven’t heard of Breddos, our local Mexican restaurant, you’ve been missing out since 2011.
It’s small and seemingly hidden – located at 82 Goswell Road just north of Old Street. If you’ve walked past the Leica camera shop then you’ve gone too far. Open for lunch and dinner this little gem of a restaurant has great food and wonderful tequila and mezcal margarita cocktails.
We were invited by Chris, the Manager to do a Barbican Life review having been there on many occasions. Our host Adonis and our waitress Angie greeted us warmly and looked after us very well. The place is small and friendly. A turntable provides the soft background music.
Before you dive into the drinks and food menu be sure to check out the daily specials on the blackboard and ask for recommendations.
We kicked off with slightly spicy margarita cocktails. Unlike in some cocktail bars, these had a distinct kick of tequila with a very pleasant warmth of chilli and salt around the rim of the glasses.
Our starters consisted of guacamole and totopos. Totopos are served warm and more authentic than your standard corn tortillas and perfect for dipping. Our second starter of queso fundido is like a baked Camembert but for us it was like a delightful Mexican fondue. The fundido cheese was filling and generous. Starters are best for sharing – leaving an appetite for the tacos or mains to come.
The Masa Fried Chicken tacos had a deep fried chunk of chicken breast complimented by Habanero mayo, small chopped pieces of Habanero chilli and pickled red cabbage. The Baja Fish was composed of a piece of tempura fried cod, pico de gallo and Habanero mayo.
Lastly the Birria de Res contained braised beef shin, short rib and two types of chillies. There are sides available and we opted for Elote – BBQ corn, topped with Habanero mayo and queso blanco.
Of course if your margarita(s) had magically disappeared, then compliment your tacos with a cold bottle of Pacifico or Modelo Mexican beer.
At Breddos there is usually a specialty dessert on the menu – how about sticky toffee churros?
So, ‘adios’ for now Breddos but we are sure to return with more friends and introduce them to this cool, buzzy neighbourhood spot.
