Residents should all have received your summer issue of Barbican Life by now and as we turn another page in the life of our community, we do so with both gratitude and a touch of melancholy. This issue marks the final instalment of Peter Duckworth’s much-loved Show Flats series. These articles have stood out not only for their depth and charm but also for how powerfully they captured the essence and legacy of the Barbican Estate. Peter’s work has left an indelible mark, and we thank him sincerely.

Closer to home, the Barbican’s own version of an Olympic 4 year extravaganza—our local elections—has now concluded. We welcome a new group of Common Councillors and look forward to their energy and fresh perspectives as they begin their work on behalf of residents in the Square Mile.

Just an interesting nugget about heating which was new to me when I just heard about it.  The underfloor heating is off as per the guidelines but in the fringe month (May) it is agreed that if the forecast is to drop below 8 degrees for 3 consecutive nights it is energised.

Looking ahead, summer is fast approaching, and with it comes our much-anticipated Garden Party. Planning is already underway, and we’re thrilled to announce the return of Mrs H and her double bass, bringing musical joy for all ages. As always, we’ll have our charity cake stall, welcome drinks, and a lively presence from our local groups, Councillors, and the BEO team.

Of course, these events rely on the wonderful energy of our volunteers. Whether it’s setting up gazebos, serving cakes, decorating the space, or simply lending a helping hand, we’d love to hear from you. If you can help, or have ideas for new stallholders, please contact Miranda Q. at mirandaquinney@yahoo.co.uk.

And to our brilliant bakers: we need you! Every year we rely on your delicious creations to support our fundraising efforts. If you’d like to contribute, please reach out to Hannah at hannah.logan05@gmail.com.

Here’s to sunny days, strong community spirit, and a joyful summer ahead!

Warm wishes,
The Barbican Life Team
