Great Fire 350

Great Fire 350

The producers of LUMIERE LONDON invite you to be part of…

GREAT FIRE 350

Dates: Tuesday 30th August – 4th September 2016

ABOUT THE EVENT

London’s Burning is a festival of art and ideas, which will reinterpret the Great Fire of London, in the 350th anniversary year. Produced by Artichoke, through art installations, performances, and talks it will highlight a catastrophic moment that had a lasting impact on the architecture, outlook and infrastructure of the City of London. The programme includes a 120-metrelong wooden sculpture of Restoration London which will be set alight on the river Thames, a compelling 6-hour underwater performance-installation by Los Angeles-based company, Early Morning Opera, a 6km line of dominoes, and a performance installation by Stan’s Cafe in the historic Inner Temple.

VOLUNTEER ROLES

DOMINOES VOLUNTEER ROLE

Artichoke is looking for friendly and enthusiastic individuals to join the team as volunteers and help make London’s Burning a success. The festival will be spread across the City of London to mark the Great Fire of London and its aftermath.

Dominoes – London’s Burning | Sat 3rd Sep

One of the highlights of London’s Burning will be Dominoes, a kinetic sculpture that will cross the City of London. Most of us have experienced the delight of toppling over dominoes one-byone. Station House Opera takes this playful notion and re-enacts it on a grand scale. First commissioned in London in 2009 as part of the London Olympics Arts Festival, Dominoes has since travelled to more than fifteen cities worldwide. To create an event of this scale we need the help of 600 volunteers. We invite you and your community to work with us on this extraordinary, celebratory project. “The volunteers are at the very heart of this project. They are the builders, the guardian angels and the public face of Dominoes … through them the city streets will be reclaimed for the inhabitants and the public to enjoy for one special day.” Julian Maynard Smith, Artistic Director, Station House Opera

REQUIREMENTS

Participation in Dominoes doesn’t require particular skills or significant time investment; everyone has the opportunity to be at the centre of this memorable event. Working alongside the artists from Station House Opera, Dominoes volunteers will be responsible for: → building the line of dominoes → looking after the line → answering questions from the public → contributing to social media You don’t need to be able to do all of these all tasks! Everyone can play a different role. 26,000 breezeblocks are lined-up to create a moving sculpture that runs through the city, unfolding over the course of the day and culminating spectacularly. The dominoes will travel along London’s streets, squares, and buildings, occasionally disappearing and resurfacing, sometimes pausing for sculptural performances as the line threads its way through the path that the Great Fire of London took, linking our diverse community in a symbolic as well as physical chain of cause and effect.
