On the 8th March we celebrate International Women’s Day and the theme for 2021 is ‘Choose to Challenge’.

Here is a poem from nearby Islington resident, Natasha Anne Kelleher, to get us warmed up to the day!

WOMANHOOD

by Natasha Anne Kelleher (2018)

WOMANHOOD, SISTERHOOD, MOTHERHOOD

NATURE’S CONDUITS THEIR FIGHT FOR EQUALITY

STILL RAGES ON

PATERNITY FRATERNITY BELEAGUERS

WOMEN AND GIRLS STILL

IN THIS CENTURY WILL THE MARCH OF FREEDOM

THROUGH EQUALITY THRIVE ANON

LESS FRIVOLITY ON THE REASONS FOR RECOGNITION

OF SKILLS AND CONTRIBUTIONS TO THIS WORLD

WHERE MEN STILL IN BLIND IGNORANCE

GATHER FOLLOWERS TO INCITE, START INCESSANTLY

CARRYING OUT DEVASTATING WARS

WOMEN STANDING FIRM KEEPING THE WORLD AFLOAT

WITH STOIC QUIETNESS

TO REQUITE WITH FEMININE MIGHT

TO AT LAST BAN MAN FROM

STIRRING CONSTANT PLIGHT

WHILST HOLDING ON TO THE PURSE STRINGS

OF THE WORLD’S ABUNDANT RICHES

WITHOUT A FLINCH OF CONSCIENCE TO THEIR UNRELENTING

AVARICE PAIN AND PERPETUATING BLIGHT

IN WHICH WOMEN WITHOUT BREAKING ENDEAVOUR

TO AMELIORATE THIS DEVIL’S DELIGHT

A WORLD WITHOUT WOMEN COULD NOT EXIST

THE GIVERS, THE NURTURERS,

THE SENSIBLE TO THE ABSURD

WILL ONE DAY WHEN WOMEN THEMSELVES

UNITE INSTEAD OF COMPETE

WILL GRIND ON THROUGH THIS MARCH

UNTIL MEN’S INFLUENCE TO HISTORY IT WILL RECEDE

THEN HUMANITY WILL AT LAST

IN PEACE BE FREED
