The organisers of the London Festival of Architecture 2017 say they like to introduce the young to architecture and London’s architectural heritage, which is why this year’s programme has more events for families and kids than ever before. The LFA reckons this programme is a brilliant way of introducing young minds (and the young at heart) to the wonders of the built environment – through exploration, creativity and play. So from the return of the phenomenally popular Great Architecture Bake Off to building workshops at the Dulwich Picture Gallery, there’s something for everyone. Here’s some of the highlights, and you can find many, many more at www.londonfestivalofarchitecture.org. |

The Great Architectural Bake-Off
10 June
Fitzroy Square, W1T 6EY

We have witnessed some of the worlds most iconic buildings rise out of butter and flour, at the hands of some of the biggest design firms in London and New York for the past two years and we are thrilled to be hosting The Great Architectural Bake-Off again this summer.
The challenge will be to create the best interpretation of a building or landmark entirely out of cake. In association with the London Festival of Architecture, London’s finest architecture and design firms will battle it out in Fitzroy Square. We expect temperatures to rise and the gloves to come off in what plans to be a fantastic culinary event.

Sir John Soane’s Museum, 13 Lincoln’s Inn Fields, Holborn, WC2A 3BPOur bodies can hold memories, just like our minds. This practical session will use yoga postures to explore architecture and the built environment. Come along to number 14 Lincoln’s Inn Fields to do some gentle movement, whilst also learning about the way buildings are designed by architects.
Sir John Soane was particularly inspired by buildings in Ancient Rome and Greece. This session intends to introduce some of the structures of these buildings, such as columns and arches, and use our bodies to help understand how they are constructed.

Caxton House Community Centre, 129 Saint John’s Way, N19 3RQThis practical session will explore the future of aging in London. Are the people designing our later-year environments getting it right? At a certain stage in our lives our domestic design preferences (design-preferences made significant through a life-time of memories acquired) are disregarded – why, in the age of the 3D printer and mass-customisation, in one of the most technologically advanced cities in the world, are we not putting our long-acquired personal-taste to use and each designing our own personal later-year environments?
