It’s the new kid on the block, better known as Malaysia Boleh.
Its motto is that ‘through everything, one simple joy bound us together more than any political slogan: food.’
We recently visited this wonderful new venue located at 12-14 St John Street and were delighted by the quality and flavours of the Malaysian food. Our visit was for a late lunch as during peak lunch and dinner times the restaurant is quite busy. We simply wanted to take our time, relax and enjoy every flavour and aroma.
The venue is quite informal but do not be fooled as delivering good food is Malaysia Boleh’s mission. Chefs Tim, Leong and Wai each specialise in particular types of Malaysian cuisine that allows the diners to sample and appreciate Malaysian cuisine from different regions of the country.
We started our Malay journey with some Curry Puffs, a type of small party tart resembling small Cornish pasties but flakier. They were light, tasty and with a subtle spicy flavour. You have vegetarian or meat options. Delightful. Our second starter consisted of Chicken Sate Skewers. The peanut sauce was aplenty and the chicken was superbly tender.
As we moved into our main courses we sampled the Malaysian national dish Nasi Lemak. A combination of surf & turf now elevated to a higher plane from its humble farmer’s origins.
Our second main course was Curry Laksa. A very generous portion was served to us containing noodles with a mild chilli sauce and very tender and flavoursome chicken. This dish represents a fusion of Malay and Chinese cooking and will not disappoint.
To further highlight the varied flavour of our dishes, we opted for beer instead of wine. The beer truly compliments the spices in all the dishes.
So go and be adventurous and try out this little gem of a restaurant where you’ll be warmly welcomed and will depart feeling treasured.
Oh and don’t forget to let them know you’re from the Barbican Estate.
