The opportunities to visit our lovely gardens are rare, as they have been created especially as a peaceful haven for the residents who live in the almshouse here. We are therefore delighted to announce that, due to very popular demand, we are opening them for a monthly series of Open Garden evenings. Join us for a relaxed evening when you will be free to walk amongst the gardens on these non-guided events, with the opportunity to enjoy an informal BBQ and bar. Discover this beautifully planted oasis on our stunning seven acre site.
Crossrail and the Charterhouse Tour

From the Black Death to the founding of a Carthusian monastery to London’s newest railway, discover the secrets that lie behind, or rather underneath, the Charterhouse. As Crossrail tunnelled its way across London, the remains of a 14th century plague pit were unearthed. Following on from her series of SOLD OUT walking tours for the Museum of London, join London Town Tours guide Julie Chandler to find out about the tunnelling, station design, the trains, the archaeology, and how Crossrail impacted on life at the Charterhouse on this unique tour. £20. Approx 90 minute tour.

Following its success during London Festival of Architecture we are offering our new Architecture Tour again this August. Join one of our expert guides to explore the many architectural surprises at the Charterhouse. From medieval monastery to Tudor mansion, postwar renovation to invigorating 21stcentury adaptation of the Charterhouse buildings and open spaces, comprise a wealth of fascination in the heart of London. Tudor brick juxtaposed against medieval stone, windows and doorways recycled into modern entrances, elegant Victorian functionality and 1950s innovation; every element of these historic buildings breathes a story about the visionaries who have contributed to this remarkable estate, from Henry Yevele to Eric Parry. Preludes & Vollenteries 23: ‘I am falling’

International violin soloist Peter Sheppard Skærvedis bringing his concert series, inspired by the ancient churches of London’s Square Mile, to our Chapel here at the Charterhouse. Playing violin and viola Peter will be performing works by Tobias Hume (1579 – 1645) Thomas Baltzar (1630-1661), Anthony Poole (c.1629-1692), and a new piece by young Swedish composer David Riebe inspired directly by the early history of Charterhouse Square. The programme is an imaginary meeting between three string players who worked, played and died in the city in the 1600s. The extraordinary figure of gamba composer and virtuoso Captain Tobias Hume provides inspiration for the programme, who spent the last 13 year of his life as a ‘poor brother’ her at Charterhouse, and was buried here. The Thomas Sutton Lecture

We are delighted to announce that the 2019 Thomas Sutton Lecture will be presented by High Court Judge Sir Mark Warby. TitledMore and more – law & the Charterhouse,Sir Mark will be presenting his own research on how closely the Charterhouse has been associated with law throughout history. His interest in the subject was first sparked in 2017 when he arrived here as ‘consort’ to the Master, Ann Kenrick. Sir Thomas More is perhaps the most famous legal mind to be associated with the Charterhouse, but there are many others, as Sir Mark’s lecture will reveal. Tickets £15 (Friends £12).
