2019 Thomas Sutton Lecture

“More and more – law and the London Charterhouse”

This year’s Thomas Sutton Lecture, named for the 17th century entrepreneur who established the charity here, focuses on the law and how its exponents and evolution have been linked over the centuries to the Charterhouse. Here to present it will be High Court Judge Sir Mark Warby, whose own research has informed this fascinating perspective on London’s legal history. The Lecture is on Thursday 17th October at 7.00pm in the Great Chamber.

In his lecture, Mark Warby suggests that the links between the Charterhouse and the law are not as well understood or as well recognised as they deserve to be. He will tell of six “more or less distinguished” lawyers with strong links to the Charterhouse, going back to the early 16th century. The talk will be illustrated with portraits of the leading figures, and some peripheral ones of which less is commonly known.  Two themes run throughout – Liberalism and Irascibility – and the figures featured include Sir Thomas More, Sir William Blackstone and Lord Browne-Wilkinson – who, all for very different reasons spent some time at the Charterhouse.

Sir Mark Warby became interested in the way the law is intertwined with the history of the Charterhouse when he came to live here in 2017 as husband (or ‘consort’) of Ann Kenrick OBE – the first female Master of the Charterhouse.

Previous presenters of the Thomas Sutton Lecture include historian and author Tracey Borman,  Vincent Gillespie, J.R.R Tolkein Professor of English Literature and Language at Lady Margeret Hall, University of Oxford, and Dr Julian Luxford, Reader in Art History at University of St Andrews and specialist in the art and architecture of the Carthusians.

The evening event starts at 6.30pm with refreshments, the lecture starts at 7.00pm
