Summer in the City of London brings with it a familiar and welcome shift in pace. The light lingers longer over the Barbican’s terraces, the gardens feel fuller, and the City itself takes on that rare combination of energy and ease. We surface for the sun!  It’s a season of rediscovery – of our surroundings, of one another, and of the many communities that make the Barbican more than just a place to live.

Over the coming months, there’s plenty to look forward to. From pop-up events and cultural happenings spilling out across the Square Mile to quieter evenings on balconies and in courtyards, summer is a time to make the most of where we are. But if there’s one date in particular to circle in your diary, it’s the Barbican Association Summer Party – now an annual highlight that perfectly captures the spirit of our community.

More than just a social gathering, the party is a chance to reconnect with neighbours, meet new faces, and discover the wide range of local groups and initiatives that quietly enrich life here all year round. Whether your interests lie in gardening, music, history, volunteering – or, as this issue reminds us, wine – there is almost certainly a group waiting to welcome you. And many of them will be there on the day, ready to share what they do and how to get involved.

One such group, featured in this issue, is the wonderfully named Barbican Sabreurs – a collective that neatly embodies the blend of curiosity, creativity and conviviality that defines Barbican life.

For those new to the story, the Sabreurs began in much the same way many Barbican connections do: through a shared moment. Invited to run the wine stall at the 2023 Summer Garden Party, a group of residents found common ground in a simple appreciation of good wine. Not expertise, not formality – just enthusiasm. From that modest beginning grew a group dedicated to exploring the world of wine together and, importantly, bringing others along for the journey.  What stands out most in the Sabreurs’ story, however, is not the wine itself but the spirit behind it. This is a group born of shared curiosity, sustained by friendship, and open to anyone willing to join in.

And that brings us back to the wider Barbican community. The Summer Party offers a unique opportunity to discover groups like the Sabreurs – alongside many others you might not yet have encountered. It’s a chance to turn a passing interest into a regular pastime, to move from recognising faces in the lift to sharing conversations over a glass, a game, or a project.

In a city as busy and complex as London, community doesn’t happen by accident. It grows through small gestures, shared experiences, and a willingness to get involved. Summer, with its open doors and lighter evenings, provides the perfect moment to do just that.

So as you look ahead to the months to come, take a moment to plan not just your holidays but your time here. Make space for the Summer Party. Wander over to a stall that catches your eye. Say yes to an invitation. You never quite know where it might lead – perhaps even to a vineyard, a tasting, or a new group of friends raising a glass together.

Here’s to a summer well spent.
